Hybrid closed-loop system – how close to artificial pancreas are we?

Summary: Insulin pump therapy is becoming a popular method of insulin delivery for people with diabetes type 1. The most technologically advanced systems currently available in Poland stop insulin infusion in response to existing or predicted low sensor glucose values. The patients in US could also use the MiniMedÆ 670G system, the world’s first hybrid closed-loop insulin delivery system that combines user-delivered premeal boluses with automatic interprandial insulin delivery based on subcutaneous sensor data. „Ready to use” fully automatic insulin delivery called an „Artificial Pancreas” (AP) systems offered by industry are either still in development or very expensive; as a result, a „do-it-yourself” movement of APS (DIY APS) with system built by a patient, could be an interesting option.
