Why should hypoglycaemia be avoided at all costs in the course of diabetes

Summary: Hypoglycemia is a complication of the treatment of diabetes, which may be a life-threatening condition, increases the risk of complications distant mainly in the field of cardiovascular diseases, reduces the quality of life of patients and is the reason for failure to achieve the goals of therapy. Hypoglycemia is biochemically diagnosed at blood glucose lower than 70 mg/dl, most often in patients treated with insulin or sulphonylureas. The predisposed groups are: patients with long-term type 1 diabetes and unawareness of hypoglycemia, patients with pancreatic diabetes and complicated autonomic neuropathy of the gastrointestinal tract. The best method to control glycemia with the ability to respond quickly to the hypoglycemic tendency are systems for continuous subcutaneous monitoring. Modern treatment of diabetes should be based on the use of drugs with minimal risk of hypoglycemia or in patients with type 1 diabetes on insulin therapy with a personal subcutaneous pump.
