Urinary tract infection prophylaxis in older patients
Summary:
Urinary tract infections (UTI) are common in older persons. The main risk factors are: lack of estrogens and pelvic organ prolapse in women, prostate enlargement or infection in men, and long-term urinary catheterization in both sexes. While treatment of single UTI episodes is similar to that in the younger population, the main challenge facing clinicians is their recurrence. The paper reviews the preventive measures for UTI in these three main high-risk populations: postmenopausal women, men with prostate diseases, and patients with a permanent urinary catheter.
Keywords: urinary tract infection, postmenopausal women, prostatic hyperplasia, acute prostatitis, urinary catheterization
