Is the diagnosis and treatment of asthma possible in a family medicine setting?
Summary:
Asthma diagnosis and treatment could be done in the family medicine office. Moreover, family doctors or pediatricians should modify asthma treatment on a daily basis, based on the asthma control level and patient response to the prescribed therapy. Asthma diagnosis is mostly based on history and physical examination. Spirometry and a chest x-ray are useful in asthma diagnosis, but treatment could be initiated based on thorough analysis of patient history and physical examination. Asthma treatment in many cases should consist of inhaled long-acting beta-2-agonists and glucocorticosteroids in one inhaler. From many combination inhalers, the utilization of breath-activated ones should be of interest.
