The mechanism of liver injury and the influence of silimarin on hepatic regeneration

Summary: Annually in Poland over 10 thousand man and 3 thousand women die of liver disorders according to World Health Organization. Irrespective of the cause of liver injury (alcohol, viral hepatitis, drugs, obesity) chronic inflammation leads to progressive accumulation of fibrotic tissue ie. hepatic fibrosis. Deposits of connective tissue in the liver and decrease in number of active hepatocytes cause life-threatening complications, including liver cirrhosis, decompensation and hepatocellular carcinoma. Silibilin is one of the best recognized natural flavonoids used to treat liver disorders. It is isolated form Milk thistle (Silybum marianum). Mechanism of action as well as its utility in the therapy of chronic liver disorders will be further characterized in this manuscript.
