Treatment of Clostridium difficile infection according to new recommendations

Summary: The paper discusses the latest update of clinical practice guidelines on Clostridium difficile infection, which was published in 2018. The updated guidelines, which incorporate recommendations for children, change the management of this infection significantly. This includes the decreasing role of metronidazole in the treatment of initial episodes of CDI and earlier introduction of vancomycin. The role of fidaxomycin seems to be stable. The guidelines list vancomycin followed by rifaximin treatment as improving the handling of first recurrence in adults and second or subsequent recurrences of CDI in both adults and children. Fecal microbiota transplantation is also very useful in the case of recurrent infection.
Keywords: Clostridium difficile infection, vancomycin, fidaxomycin, rifaximin
