Abdominal symptoms in patients with diabetes: mechanism and diagnosis

Summary: Diabetes mellitus affects virtually every organ system in the body and the degree of organ involvement depends on the duration and severity of the disease as well as other comorbidities. Gastrointestinal side effects include pancreatopathy, SIBO, esophageal dysmotility, gastroesophageal reflux disease, gastroparesis, neuropathy, nonalcoholic fatty liver. They cause bothersome gastrointestinal symptoms and decrease diabetic patients’ quality of life. Though gastrointestinal complications of diabetes are relatively common, awareness of their manifestations and treatment options is low among physicians. Professional management of gastrointestinal symptoms is important for diabetes control and improvement in the quality of life of patients.
