Summary:
Chronic constipation belongs to one of the clinical issues we have to struggle with in our everyday practice. Constipation often affects the elderly population, being polyetiological and thus difficult to treat. In this article we summarize American Gastroenterology Association and French National Society of Coloproctology guidelines from 2018 that take into account the most recent publications on the topic. Both guidelines focus on the early detection of defecatory disorders and then referral for biofeedback treatment. They also emphasize the major role of osmotic agents in chronic constipation treatment, such as macrogols and bisacodyle. New drugs are mentioned as well, like prucalopride available on the Polish market. We will also show what the qualification criteria are for surgical treatment and why fecal microbiota transplantation can become a potential modality in the future.
