Diagnostics and treatment of asthma in children under five years old
Summary:
Asthma is a chronic, inflammatory, heterogeneous disorder. It is characterized by recurrent airway obstruction in the form of expiratory wheezing, coughing, breathlessness and difficulty in breathing, showing variable severity and resolving after treatment or sometimes spontaneously. It is one of the most common chronic diseases in children, affecting, according to different sources, 2-20% of the pediatric population. Diagnosing early-onset asthma can be a difficult diagnostic challenge. Up to 40% of children < 5 years of age have at least one episode of symptoms of airway obstruction, such as wheezing, coughing or shortness of breath. Our task is to identify the group of children who need to be diagnosed with asthma and start appropriate management. Treatment taken as soon as possible reduces the risk of asthma exacerbations in the future, reduces the number of side effects of therapy and stops changes in the structure of the bronchi.
