Irritable bowel syndrome: a continually relevant problem
Summary:
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common functional disorder of the digestive tract. The pathogenesis of IBS is not clearly defined. The most important element of diagnostics is a carefully conducted interview, as well as a thorough physical examination. An important element of IBS therapy is a good, friendly doctor-patient relationship. The first-line approach to IBS therapy should be dietary and lifestyle advice. The next step in therapy is dietary low FODMAP recommendations. Probiotics can bring relief to the symptoms of IBS. The pharmacotherapy of IBS should be directed at symptoms that predominate in a specific form.
