Distinguishing infectious rhinitis from allergic rhinitis
Summary:
Allergic rhinitis is the most common type of rhinitis. In the new classification, allergic rhinitis is subdivided into “intermittent” and “persistent”. The most common cause of non-allergic rhinitis is acute viral infections. Other types of non-allergic rhinitis include hormonal, drug-induced, structural, work-related rhinitis, as well as rhinitis medicamentosa and non-allergic rhinitis with eosinophilia syndrome. A comprehensive history and focused physical examination usually suggests the correct diagnosis. The most common diagnostic tests for allergic rhinitis are the skin prick test and the allergen-specific immunoglobulin E antibody test.
