Dementia is an increasingly common problem in the family doctor’s office
Summary:
The purpose of the paper is to familiarize family doctors with dementia. Because this is a very broad topic, the authors focus on the most common form of dementia, which is Alzheimer’s disease. The family doctor must know in which situations patients should be referred to a specialist in psychiatry for further diagnosis. It is also very important to know how to talk with patients and their family. Family doctors should know about the possibilities of pharmacological treatment as well as non-pharmacological therapies for patients with dementia.
