Summary:
The gout is the most common inflammatory arthropathy and is caused by the deposition of monosodium urate crystals during hyperuricemia. Hyperuricemia may also play a role in the metabolic syndrome and diseases accompanying metabolic syndrome. New diagnostic criteria were developed to improve gout diagnosis and management. The treatment has two phases – management of acute gout attack and its prevention by lowering uric acid levels. Colchicine plays and important role in the management of gout attack. It is also a first line drug in gout attacks prevention during uric acid lowering therapy. Colchicine also plays a role in the management of other diseases, including some cardiovascular diseases, and indications for its use may be extended in the future.
