Coexistence of asthma and cardiovascular diseases: therapeutic implications
Summary:
The increasing prevalence of asthma in the elderly has drawn growing attention recently. Multimorbidity is becoming more and more common with age, making the choice of drugs in each condition extremely complicated. Concurrent asthma and cardiovascular diseases make this task a challenge as in both instances the therapeutic effect depends on the adrenergic system but the mechanisms employed to achieve this target are exactly contradictory. The article discusses inhaled beta-agonist use in patients with cardiologic co-morbidities as well as the use of beta-adrenolytics in asthmatics.
Keywords: asthma, cardio-vascular diseases, SABA, LABA, beta-blockers
