Combining short-acting beta2-agonists with short-acting antimuscarinic agents in children with bronchial obstruction

Summary: Current data on short-acting beta2-agonists (SABA) such as salbutamol and fenoterol, a short-acting antimuscarinic agent (ipratropium bromide – SAMA), and their combination in inhalation in the treatment of bronchial obstruction in children are presented. The combination of SABA with ipratropium bromide inhalation therapy is an effective and safe procedure in the treatment of asthma exacerbations in children, including early-onset asthma both in outpatient settings and in the hospital emergency department. SABA and SAMA combinations in inhalation form are particularly effective in moderate/severe exacerbation of asthma, regardless of the age of the child.
Keywords: short-acting beta2-agonist, salbutamol, fenoterol, short-acting muscarinic antagonist, ipratropium bromide, inhalation, nebulization, asthma, bronchiolitis, cystic fibrosis, children
