Treatment of patients with chronic respiratory diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic
Summary:
COVID-19, the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which was first identified in Wuhan in December 2019. The virus has spread rapidly around the world and has changed our perception of the greatest health threats of the 21st century. The clinical presentation of the disease covers a wide spectrum of symptoms from asymptomatic carriers, mild course with symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection to severe pneumonia, ARDS and sepsis. More than half of the patients admitted to hospital for COVID-19 have other diseases. Of these, the most common are hypertension, diabetes, obesity and coronary heart disease. Comorbidities contribute to a worse prognosis and an increased risk of a severe course of the disease. Do chronic respiratory diseases also carry a risk of complications in the course of COVID-19? How should patients with chronic respiratory diseases be treated during the period of increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection? Does the treatment of COVID-19 in this group of patients require special attention?
