Neurological complications in the course of COVID-19 infection and vitamin B complex therapy

Summary: COVID-19 is a disease with a very varied course, and the most frequent symptoms observed during infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus are fever, cough, dyspnea, significant weakness, muscle or joint pain. At the same time, the mechanism of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is known to involve invasion not just of the respiratory tract, but also many other organs, including the central and peripheral nervous system. Neurological complications connected with the central nervous system in the course of COVID-19 include encephalopathy, encephalitis, meningitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke, and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. If the disease affects the peripheral nervous system, complications include smell and taste dysfunction, myopathy, polyneuropathy and symptoms of Guillain-Barré (GBS) syndrome.
At the same time, when considering long-term treatment of the above disorders, we still have no data to indicate the contribution of specific medicinal substances to preventing the development of at least some of the neurological symptoms. Of course, in the case of cerebrovascular incidents, meningitis or GBS, the usual causal treatment is the standard. However, we must not forget other symptoms, like myopathy or polyneuropathy, where, alongside proper diagnostics, consideration should be given to introducing measures to support regeneration, including the well-known vitamin B complex therapy that is used in similar disorders.
