Sarcopenia and frailty syndrome in older adults - diagnosis and treatment
Summary:
Sarcopenia and frailty syndrome are dynamic and potentially reversible geriatric giants prevalent among the elderly, especially in the population aged over 75 years. Currently they are one of the leading risk factors of adverse events, such as falls, functional decline, hospitalisation, increased dependency as well as premature death. Early diagnosis of those syndromes with appropriate prevention and treatment intervention are a chance to avoid disability and other disadvantageous consequences. The aim of this paper is to emphasize to practicing doctors that sarcopenia and frailty syndrome are not the same as the physiological aging process. Additionally, we want to convey to them that there are tools available for proper diagnosis as well as optimal treatment.
Keywords: sarcopenia, osteosarcopenia, frailty syndrome, elderly
