Mesh nebulizer with inhalation chamber: Technical novelty or significant progress in nebulization?
Summary:
A preliminary quantitative evaluation of the performance of a mesh nebulizer (VMN) in combination with an inhalation chamber (IC) was performed using the Intec Twister Mesh NE-105 VMN and the Intec Spiro Kid as examples. Nebulization mass output for saline was measured gravimetrically, whereas droplet size distribution was determined by laser diffraction. It was demonstrated that the VMN + IC system increased the mass of aerosol dose available for inhalation by about 73%. At the same time, there was a decrease in the Dv50 from 6.2 µm for the nebulizer alone to 4.7 µm for VMN + IC. It was accompanied by an increase in the mass of droplets penetrating the lower respiratory tract (FPF) from ca. 35% to ca. 55%. The resulting increase in aerosol mass available for inhalation and improved parameters of the aerosol cloud should result in more efficient aerosol deposition in the lower respiratory tract, which finds support in the literature.
