Vademecum of the risk manager – the new guidelines on cardiovascular disease prevention in everyday practice
Summary:
In August 2021, the new guidelines on cardiovascular disease prevention in clinical practice were presented at the International European Society of Cardiology Congress. A large body of new evidence and clinical trials conducted in the last few years led to the development of this new document. The cardiometabolic continuum initiated by the insulin resistance, common in the developed countries, aggravated by the decline in physical activity during the pandemic, have resulted in a deterioration in the control of commonly known risk factors. As result, the risk for coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure as well as for stroke has significantly increased. The new guidelines contain the principles regarding management the lipid and glucose metabolism disorders and arterial hypertension in one document, as they often coexist and reveal synergism in the initiation and acceleration of atherogenesis. Therefore, a therapeutic approach aimed at only one selected risk factor has no chance to stop the pathophysiological cascade. This paper synthetically presents practical tips on how we should optimize the therapy of and identify new candidates for beginning such treatment. The most important changes in the therapy are discussed in a pragmatic way.
