Antiplatelet and anticoagulant treatment in the family doctor’s office. Difficult questions – clear answers
Summary:
Issues related to appropriate pharmacotherapy in patients requiring antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy are very complicated. Appropiate treatment is a challenge for cardiologists who are confronted with increasing complexity of clinical situations. The multitude of drugs used and the complicate dosage regimens give rise to doubts about the selection of appropriate therapy. A huge number of patients with cardiological disorders are treated by primary care physicians who often struggle with problems related to proper pharmacotherapy related to the regulation of coagulation and fibrinolysis processes. Patients after coronary interventions, with atrial fibrillation or implanted artificial valves are groups very often found in GP offices, and their treatment often raises questions with unclear answers.
In the following considerations we will decide in a clear way, and thus requiring many simplifications, to present the basic groups of drugs affecting the haemostasis system and to present selected problematic clinical situations pointing to the right way of adequate pharmacotherapy.
