The challenges in treating COPD in older people

Summary: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common lung diseases in the world, and the number of people suffering from it increases with age. The treatment of COPD in older patients is quite a challenge, because in addition to the need of controlling the disease and preventing exacerbations, one should take into account the profile of the geriatric patient, changes in the respiratory system due to the aging process, the patient’s disabilities, cognitive deficits, changes in drug metabolism, and finally, frequent multi-morbidity, and hence polypharmacy and adverse drug reactions. The basis for treatment of COPD in geriatric patients is the individualization of therapy adapted to the functional state of the patient, educating the patient and his or her caregiver, and looking for side effects.
