What is the symptomatology of COVID-19 in children?
Summary:
The epidemiology, infectivity, and course of COVID-19 disease in the pediatric population is different than in adults. Worldwide, the incidence of COVID-19 among children is much lower than among adults. Children are less frequently responsible for transmitting the disease to other household members, and the incubation period is longer for them. Children release the virus both as droplets and often over a long period of time through the digestive tract. Usually, COVID-19 in children is mild. The most common symptoms are fever and cough accompanied by upper respiratory symptoms such as sore throat, nasal congestion, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting. Chest radiographs are different than in adults, but due to the usually mild course of the disease, a radiological exam, especially a chest CT scan, should only be used in selected cases. The new post-infectious multiorgan inflammatory syndrome in children, temporarily related to COVID-19 (PIMS-TS, MIS-C), is rare but dangerous. It is characterized by severe inflammation, fever, abdominal symptoms, conjunctivitis, and rash. In its course, cardiac symptoms often develop. Knowledge about COVID-19 is constantly updated, which forces doctors to actively follow the latest reports.
