Mometasone/olopatadine combination in the management of allergic rhinitis
Summary:
Allergic rhinitis (AR) represents the most common manifestation of allergy. Epidemiological studies estimate the incidence of this disease in Poland at 14% up to 22%. The clinical manifestation of AR includes runny nose, nasal itching, blockage, sneezing attacks and post nasal drip after exposure of an allergic person to a specifi c allergen. AR often coexists with allergic conjunctivitis or allergic bronchial asthma. Viral infections should be included in the differential diagnosis. In AR management oral and intranasal antihistamines and intranasal glucocorticosteroids are the most eff ective. The fi rst studies of the combination of mometasone and olopatadine in the treatment of AR in an exposure chamber showed a quick onset of action, high eff ectiveness and a good safety profi le. Subsequent studies in a group of adolescents (from 12 years of age) and adults confi rmed the advantage of the combination of mometasone with olopatadine compared to each drug administered as monotherapy and placebo in controlling the symptoms of AR in everyday clinical practice. Additionally, a signifi cant improvement in the symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis and the patients' quality of life was found. Taking into account the results of the studies presented above, the authors of the ARIA guidelines highly position the combination of a glucocorticosteroid with an intranasal antihistamine in the standards of care in AR.
