Diabetes in kidney transplant patients

Summary: Kidney transplantation is the best treatment of end-stage renal failure. Kidney transplant recipients have suffered from many complications due to disease itself and due to immunosuppressive therapy. Posttransplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM) is one of them. The prevalence increases within the time after transplantation. Immunosuppressive drugs such as tacrolimus, cyclosporine, sirolimus, and steroids are also diabetogenic. Treatment of PTDM follows the rules for type 2 DM. Renal functions should be assessed to adjust the dose of hypoglycemic drugs accordingly, to withdraw to not to introduce the certain drugs. Modification of immunosuppression is another option.
