Management of children after foreign body or corrosive substance ingestion
Summary:
Children often accidentally swallow foreign bodies and corrosive substances while at home. The objects involved are often small items like coins or toy parts, or harmful substances like detergents. Children may show symptoms related to their respiratory or gastrointestinal systems, but sometimes there may not be any significant signs. While most foreign bodies pass through the digestive tract naturally without causing harm, magnets, batteries, and sharp objects may require endoscopic intervention to avoid life-threatening complications. In situations where potentially corrosive substances are ingested, it is essential to read the labeling on the packaging to determine the appropriate course of action. Providers who care for children should educate caregivers about potential dangers and the importance of properly securing cleaning products and batteries.
