New EAACI guidelines on allergen immunotherapy

Summary: Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is one of the most important methods of treatment of allergic diseases. It has been proven to effectively reduce symptoms and medication use and it remains the only causative method of treatment in allergology, due to its disease-modifying properties. The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology recently published a series of clinical practice guidelines to provide comprehensive evidence-based recommendations for AIT in allergic rhinitis, Hymenoptera venom allergy, IgE-mediated food allergies and in allergy prevention. Each chapter was developed based on a systematic review and meta-analysis of the topic and has been made available online on the EAACI website. The guidelines address general considerations for implementation, specific contraindications, practical aspects of therapy, safety measures and recommendations for efficacy improvement, as well as point out the gaps in evidence and future perspectives of AIT in various allergic diseases. The present paper covers the key points of the EAACI guidelines, which, despite having allergists as their primary audience, may prove relevant to all other healthcare professionals, including primary care doctors, emergency medicine specialists, nurses and pharmacists who may deal with allergic patients.
