β-Blocker in the treatment of arterial hypertension ‒ only in patients with an increased heart rate?
Summary:
Recent guidelines ‒ International, European and Polish ‒ recommend the use of β-blockers at every stage of hypertension treatment, if indications for the use of this group of drugs are identified. The authors of the guidelines emphasize that β-blockers have an established place in the treatment of hypertension coexisting with coronary artery disease, after myocardial infarction, with heart failure or atrial fibrillation. They also point out the use of β-blockers in patients with an increased heart rate above 80/min and resistant hypertension. The combination of an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor and a β-blocker has an important place in the treatment of hypertension in these clinical situations.
