Can optimal treatment of arterial hypertension interfere with the unfavorable relation between arterial stiffness and the development of stroke?
Summary:
One of the basic processes related to the aging of the body is an increase in vascular stiffness. It is an inevitable process which, in the face of risk factors ‒ hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia ‒ and genetic predisposition, may significantly accelerate. Increased vascular stiffness is also associated with a higher risk of heart attack, stroke and death. Anti-hypertensive treatment can ensure or restore the normal aging process of the vessels. In the treatment of patients with developed vascular stiffness ‒ with isolated systolic hypertension in the elderly ‒ thiazide-like diuretics and calcium antagonists play an important role.
