Patient with phantom pain ‒ novel treatment modalities
Summary:
The aim of the paper is to present up-to-date data on epidemiology, risk factors, mechanisms of phantom pain and treatment options for patients with phantom pain, based on the current and most relevant scientific papers on the subject and available in PubMed. The article discusses the options of pharmacotherapy, emphasizing the lack of scientific evidence on the effectiveness of analgesics and adjuvants in this type of neuropathic pain. The possibilities of non-pharmacological treatment using prostheses, psychotherapy, sensory discrimination training, non-invasive neuromodulation and modern methods such as mirror therapy and virtual reality are presented. Invasive treatment options were also discussed, including invasive neuromodulation and regional analgesia techniques. Modern invasive methods that can improve the quality of treatment of patients with phantom pain are also modern methods of bionic reconstruction. In patients with phantom pain, as in other chronic pain syndromes, the best results may be achieved by multimodal treatment with the use of multiple therapeutic methods simultaneously.
