Anxiety and depression in patients with chronic respiratory diseases during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: Practical advice

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has brought many changes in the way many people live their lives, including uncertainty, altered daily routines, financial pressures and social isolation. It is clear that SARS-CoV-2 is highly contagious, capable of causing severe pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and fatal outcomes, particularly in vulnerable populations. Strategies are being implemented in many countries to "flatten the curve” of the pandemic to preserve the capacity of healthcare resources. Coronavirus can affect people physically, but also psychologically. In this type of context, many will experience stress, anxiety and depressive reactions. People with chronic respiratory diseases are particularly vulnerable to psychological problems arising from the current situation. The paper presents tools that can help patients to minimize the repercussions of anxiety and depression during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
