Clonidine in the treatmentof hypertension – from urgentconditions to the therapy of difficultto control hypertension
Summary:
Clonidine is a hypotensive drug that belongs to a group of central alpha receptor agonists that have a multidirectional effect on the sympathetic nervous system expressed as a decrease in its activity, in peripheral resistance and in plasma renin activity, as well as a reduction in baroreceptor reactivity to a decrease in blood pressure. According to the current guidelines of Polish Society of Arterial Hypertension from 2019 it is recommended to use clonidine both as an urgent and chronic condition - in particular as part of polytherapy in the treatment of refractory hypertension. It should also be emphasized that clonidine is a medicine that can be used in women of childbearing potential.
