Treatment of inflammation of the mouth and throat in daily medical practice
Summary:
Health problems caused by inflammation of the mouth and throat are one of the most frequently reported symptoms by primary care patients. The symptoms of stomatitis vary depending on the cause, although it is often difficult to determine the etiology of the ailment. The common feature are pain, swelling, a noticeable and palpable change in the mouth (such as redness, blister, ulceration, erosion etc.) and difficulty swallowing and biting or chewing food. Stomatitis is an unpleasant ailment that can make it difficult to eat and drink normally, brush your teeth and even speak. Thus, patients experiencing these disorders often use over-the-counter preparations to alleviate tchem. Among the preparations designed to respond to the above-mentioned problem, there are dozens of products available on the market with different composition and mechanism of action. They are usually based on substances from the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or local anesthetics, but also on substances of natural and herbal origin and antibacterial preparations. Noteworthy are those that are easy to use, reach all places in the mouth and concentrate the dose of the drug in the place responsible for the occurrence of the ailment. In addition, the use of topical preparations reduces the risk of side effects, in particular the systemic effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. A drug often used in Poland is a 0.074% solution of diclofenac with very good pharmacological properties. It reaches every inflammatory site in the mouth and throat, where it accumulates, which strengthens the local anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect. Unlike oral medications, it has a low risk of side effects.
