Beta-blockers in the treatment of hypertension and heart disease – why do we still use them so widely?
Summary:
Beta-blockers remain a widely used group of antihypertensive drugs. This is related to the fact that their benefits have been demonstrated in a number of clinical situations. Clinical situations in which the use of beta-blockers has not previously been recommended, such as left ventricular hypertrophy, are gaining new optics. New situations are being added in which the use of beta-blockers in hypertensive patients may be beneficial, such as post-COVID syndrome. An important aspect of beta-blocker use is achieving a target heart rate. Patients with hypertension and a higher heart rate, and patients with heart failure and a heart rate that is not sufficiently lowered, have a poorer long-term prognosis. The availability of some beta-blockers, such as bisoprolol, in a wide range of doses makes it possible to choose the right dose for each patient in terms of both lowering blood pressure and achieving a target heart rate.
