Coffee and hypertension and lipid disorders
Summary:
Moderate, chronic and regular coffee consumption (2-3 cups/ day), although it may be associated with a small and clinically insignificant increase in LDL cholesterol, should be seen as a behavior that promotes lowering of blood pressure in the long term, has beneficial effects on gut microflora and vascular compliance parameters, and reduces cardiovascular risk, including death. When discussing the issue of coffee consumption with a patient with hypertension and/or lipid disorders, it should be emphasized that moderate coffee consumption (2-3 cups/ day) can have a health-promoting effect and be associated with a reduction in cardiovascular risk, including the risk of death, that filtered coffee without added milk should be preferred, and that, however a one-time consumption of coffee may be associated with a slight increase in blood pressure, its chronic use has the opposite effect. It should also be remembered that coffee is not just caffeine, so products that contain caffeine but are not coffee do not have the effects described above.
