Allergen immunotherapy – new position paper of the Polish Society of Allergology 2019
Summary:
Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is one of the most important tools in modern allergology. As the only preventive treatment available, it plays a key role in the management of patients with severe allergic rhinitis, asthma and other atopic diseases by reducing symptoms, medication intake, and significantly improving quality of life. Due to dynamic research advances, as well as legislative and administrational changes, the practical aspects of conducting AIT have changed in recent years. In recognition of those developments, the Immunotherapy Section of the Polish Society of Allergology created a position paper on allergen immunotherapy, which was released to the public in consecutive issues of the Polish Journal of Allergology. The position paper includes a comprehensive analysis of practical, legal and organizational aspects of AIT, offering both general and detailed advice on the most common issues and problems associated with this therapy. The present paper provides an overview of some of the key points of the position paper, which, despite having allergists as their primary audience, may prove relevant to all other healthcare professionals, including primary care doctors and other specialists who manage patients with allergies.
