Between Scylla and Charybdis: treatment of hypertension in elderly and very elderly patients - more or less intensive?
Summary:
The paper discusses the safety and benefits of intensive antihypertensive therapy in the elderly and very elderly. The new ESC/ESH guidelines lower blood pressure goals and indicate a need for combination treatment in hypertensive patients. The guidelines for the treatment of hypertension in the elderly, focusing on calcium channel blockers and thiazide-type diuretics, are also discussed.
