Practical strategies for preventing cardiovascular disease with the use of acetylsalicylic acid
Summary:
Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) is one of the most frequently used drugs in contemporary medicine. ASA is a non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug. It inhibits cyclooxygenase 1 (COX-1) and stops production of PGE2 prostaglandins and thromboxane responsible for plate aggregation. The use of ASA in the secondary prevention of cardiovascular events is particularly important. It should be highlighted that in selected group of patients, including those at high risk of cardiovascular events, ASA may be considered as a primary prevention. There are many studies describing new indications for the use of ASA. In current maternal-fetal medicine, prevention of pre-eclampsia is based on the administration of low dose ASA before 16 weeks of pregnancy. This article reviews the potential benefits, including less frequent side effects, of 100 mg ASA in combination with glycine in the prevention of cardiovascular events.
