Lacidipine in modern therapy of arterial hypertension and comorbidities

Summary: The dihydropiridine calcium channel blockers are commonly used in the management of hypertension and angina pectoris symptoms in patients with chronic coronary syndrome. Despite the relatively similar efficacy regarding the hypotensive effect of individual agents, different chemical properties determining their pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamic profile, mean that the clinical effects of their use may be different. This is especially visible in terms of side effects, but also in the safety profile. Lacidipine is one of the most vascular selective dihydropiridine calcium channel blockers and is practically devoid of negative inotropic effects at the doses administered clinically. The purpose of this brief review is to provide a comprehensive summary of the pharmacokinetic, efficacy, safety and tolerability profile of lacidipine, compared to other commonly used members of this group.
