The influence of smoking and anti-smoking therapy on the bronchial asthma control
Summary:
Although the percentage of adult smokers in Poland is gradually decreasing, smoking is still a widely prevalent addiction. Its proven significant harmful effect on health is particularly dangerous in chronic respiratory diseases, including asthma. Scientific data clearly indicate the harmfulness of smoking in the course of this disease in terms of lung function, the risk of exacerbation of the disease, inferior response to inhalable corticosteroids and deterioration of the quality of life. The health benefits of quitting smoking on disease control are also indisputable – improved FEV1, increased disease control, and in particular – less frequent use of rescue medication. The available methods of treatment of nicotine addiction include nicotine replacement therapy and three drugs available in Poland: bupropion, varenicline and, the only available over-the-counter, cytisine. These methods have scientifically proven effectiveness in increasing the chance of effective long-term smoking quitting. Due to the risk of worsening the course of asthma, asthmatic smokers should be particularly advised to quit the addiction and possibly consider supporting pharmacological treatment.
