Treatment of urticaria in the light of the latest EAACI/GA2LEN/EDF/WAO
Summary:
This paper discusses some aspects of classification, diagnosis and treatment included in the latest EAACI/GA2LEN/EDF/WAO guideline for management of urticaria. The newest definition says that urticaria is characterized by presence of specific skin lesions (wheals), angioedema or coexistance of both. Urticaria is classified regarding its duration as acute (< 6 weeks) and chronic. Second classification depends on possibility of identifying trigger of onset. We can distiguish induced or spontaneous urticaria. Usually acute urticaria does not require deeper diagnosis and treatment while chronic obliges to differentially exclude other possibly life-threatening medical conditions. Second generation antihistmines are still first line treatment in chronic urticaria and its daily dose can be incresed 4 times comparing with standard. Some of the drugs, such as dapson or H2 receptor antagonists, previosuly recommended as a standard are no longer inclueded in the guideline, since its low strength of scientific evidence.
